MHL FINAL ON SUNDAY NIGHT – AGM DEFERRED
The long awaited final of the Northern Region’s Minor Hurling league is at last fixed to take place on this Sunday night in Newtownshandrum under lights at 7pm. Our opponents will be the Kanturk side Cuchulainns the same side that our lads defeated in the Northern C/ship final some months ago after a very tense game which our lads only won in the last ten minutes or so.
Since then our side have gone on to win Co honours by defeating Newcestown in the final at Ballincollig, remember that Newcestown had only one point to spare over Kanturk in their Co semi final clash just before that game. It all points to another tense and exciting game on Sunday, our teams would not have much experience of playing in Newtown but its spacious arena should be to our liking and we travel very hopeful of consolidating our status as Divisional and Co champions.
Once again I am appealing to all our faithful followers to get out on Sunday evening and give our lads plenty of the support they deserve, one piece of advice, do not let it too late to get to Newtown for the 7pm throw-in, give yourself in excess of one and three quarters of an hour to get there and get parked etc, you may have to walk a short distance to the field after parking, Lets hope it will be worth it.
AGM DEFERRED
Due to the clash with the minor game, our AGM has had to be deferred; it is proposed to reschedule it for the following Sunday evening commencing at 7pm. This has to be confirmed early this week and we should be in a position to confirm the time and date for the AGM in next weeks notes.
BRENNAN CUP WIN FOR FOOTBALLERS
Our club can be very proud of our Intermediate footballers, long finished with league and c/ship campaigns, few would quibble if they decided not to play any more games until the new season, however they have answered the club’s call to honour the North Cork Board’s new competition for junior and Intermediate clubs in the Division by playing for the Brennan Cup in honour of a great old Gael and gentleman the late John Brennan of Kilshannig,
To date our team has defeated both Glanworth and Mitchelstown, the latter on last Saturday night under lights in Fermoy. The final score in that game read Fermoy 3-10 Mitchelstown 2-9,
A strong gale force wind which blew directly into the lower goal made things difficult for both sides, a series of point blank saves by Fermoy goalkeeper Ivan O’Callaghan kept his team in contention during the first half and they were glad to be only two points in arrears at the interval 1-4 to 0-5.
The second period saw Fermoy make full use of the advantage and they quickly moved into a five point lead with goals coming from the boots of Alan Baragry, Alan O’Connor and Seanie McCarthy, To Mitchelstown’s credit they never gave up and eventually succeeded in hauling back the Fermoy lead by procuring a few great scores themselves including a brilliant goal. However Fermoy just managed to finish well and they held on to run out winners on the above final scoreline.
Fermoy will now meet Mallow in the final which will be played as soon as possible. The team was Ivan O’Callaghan, Ken Nagle, Darragh O’Carroll, Brian O’Callaghan, Eoin Clancy, Jeff Daly, Sean Shanahan, Jack Hutchings, Rory O’Hagan, (0-1), Alan Baragry 1-2, Alan O’Connor 1-5, Kieran Dorgan 0-1, Paudie Shanahan and Mark O’Flynn, Subs used Rory Clancy, Mattie Condon, Richie Kelleher, David Conran and Michael Pyne.
BEST WISHES TO TOMAS AND RORY
The best wishes of all in the club are extended to Tomas Clancy and Rory O’Hagan as they and their University College Cork contest the Munster club SFC final in Fitzgerald Stadium Killarney on Sunday next 2.30 pm against the Kerry champions Dr Crokes of Killarney. It would certainly be a great start to the day if they can pull off a win against the home side.
REMEMBERING 1986 TEAMS
On this Saturday Dec 3rd, the U21 and minor hurling teams of the year 1986 will come together to share their successes of that glorious year for our club, very few will have to be reminded of what happened in that year
As it still seems only like yesterday
That was the year when our club’s U21 Hurling team swept all before them to win the Cork Co U21 Hurling title for the first and only time in the history of the club in Fermoy. The minor hurlers, some of whom were on the panel of the U21 team, had their bit of glory when they captured the North Cork MHC by defeating Ballyhea in the final.
Well on Saturday evening all the fun of those days will be recalled when both teams come together for a very happy re-union occasion. The celebrations will get under way at about 6.45pm with a short game between the members of both sides before it will be time to get indoors at the Clubhouse for a celebratory meal and get together by both teams. A video of the final v Blarney will be on view.
Around 8.45 or so it will be doors open to members past and present and indeed to all who would like to be part of the celebrations and would like to meet once again with their heroes of 21 years ago, of course some of them are no strangers to any of us as they have since proved wonderful ambassadors for the club either as selectors, coaches, club officers and just plain supporters over the years.
Arthur Coughlan, Trevor Cooney and Mikey O’Brien were part of the organising body for this night and they are issuing an invitation to all past and present members and supporters to come along and join with them in what should prove a wonderful occasion for all.
LOTTO JACKPOT WORTH E18, 800
Once again the Lotto Jackpot survived another all out assault last week when the draw took place at the Clubhouse. The numbers drawn were 5, 10, 15, 19, there was no winner and the Lucky Dips winners of E40 each were – Una O’Neill c/o Tom O’Brien Junr, Peter O’Sullivan c/o Charlie Macs Bar, Jerry Hallinan c/o Brian Shinnick, Jerry and Niamh Condon c/o Juvenile Club, Ronan Cavanagh c/o Juvenile Club,
As usual on behalf of the clubs involved, I offer sincere thanks to all our supporters, subscribers and promoters for all your help and cooperation with the running of this draw. Just to remind all that you can still play Lotto online |

BUSY FEW WEEKS AHEAD
Despite the fact that our playing season is officially closed, there are always a few loose ends to be tidied up, top of the list here is the outstanding Northern Section MH League final in which our lads will meet Kanturk Cuchulainns, at the time of writing we do not have any definite news of this fixture except to say that the club were put on alert to expect it at the first opportunity, this week end would appear to be that opportunity so the advice is to either check with club officials or watch out for the weekend fixtures list.
Should the game go ahead this weekend, I would appeal to our followers to come out once again to support this team who will be all out to prove that their win in the Co final a few weeks ago was no fluke. Kanturk will be very difficult to overcome but our side have done it before in the Divisional final so it would be nice to crown the year with the league title also. So for details of venue, time and date contact your club officials.
BRENNAN CUP
While no details of this competition are at hand, it does look as if our next opponents in this new Avondhu Board competition which is run in memory of the late John Brennan of Kilshannig a former President of the Avondhu Board, will be Mitchelstown who defeated Liscarroll on Sunday last,
While no details of this or indeed of any other games are at hand when writing, it would be well to check the weekend fixtures or contact any club official who should know the score.
AGM SUN DEC 4TH
A date for your diary is Sunday Dec 4th when our club’s AGM is set to take place in the Clubrooms commencing at 7pm. As always this is the most important meeting of the year and it is hoped that as many members as possible will be able to attend.
U21 HULERS REUNION ON SAT DEC 3RD
It hardly seems like 21 years ago since a team led by Stevie McGrath, Stephen Dennehy, Trevor Cooney, Arthur Coughlan, Mike O’Donnell, Mike O’Brien etc won the Cork Co U21 hurling C/ship by defeating Blarney at Midleton after a thrilling game, well that game and many more will be recalled when the team comes together for the first time since that great day, the celebrations officially start with a match between the U21 team of 1986 line out against the winning Fermoy minor hurling team of that same year, this is due to take place at approx 6.30pm and after that it is all back to the club house for one hell of an evening, All are welcome but don’t miss it.
MINOR AND JUVENILE CLUB AGM
The Agm of the minor and juvenile club section will take place in the Clubhouse on Wed November 30th at 8.30pm All are welcome to this very important section of our club.

LOTTO JACKPOT REACHES E18, 600
Numbers drawn were 14, 23, 27, 29, there was no winner of the Jackpot worth E18, 400, Lucky Dip winners were Mark & Oonagh O’Driscoll c/o Juvenile club, Martin Roche c/o Brian Shinnick, Bronwyn Murphy c/o Terry Baker, Ann Barry c/o Tom McCarthy, Frank Heffernan c/o The Long Bar,
This week the draw returns to the Clubhouse where the Jackpot will increase to E18,600 Our thanks as always to all who help in any way towards keeping this draw a success for our clubs, Remember you can still play Lotto online at www.fermoygaa.com for just E2
BEST WISHES TO FLAN
On behalf of our club, I wish to extend sincere best wishes to club member Flan Groarke on the occasion of his recent retirement as senior executive Engineer with Cork Co Council.
Flan has been with Cork Co Council for 34 years with most of being spent based in Fermoy, after a few good years with the Grange club, he transferred his allegiance to Fermoy club of which he has been a faithful member since, as a Kerry man it was natural for him to play football and I doubt if Fermoy or any team had a player as dedicated to the game as Flan was and still is today. He played at midfield with our Intermediate side which went to a County final only to lose to Glanmire in the late eighties, he was always a great man to attend to his own fitness needs and it was often a common sight to see Flan with a few footballs and he training away on his own, I’m sure that he would love to be playing in today’s game where training is a much more important aspect with all teams.
Flan is a great club member, he has been on selection committees at various times, but behind all that, he can always be relied upon to help the club in many ways with fund raising, gates etc, We hope he might be able to find even more time now.
On behalf of our club, I wish Flan and Mary a long, happy and healthy retirement in Glenabo.
VOTES OF SYMPATHY
The sympathy of our club is extended to the wife Nora and families of the late great Johnny Browne of Castletownroche who died recently, I believe that most of us here in Fermoy have either played with or against him over the years, the man was a pure gentleman on and off the field, he did his hurling with his head and his hurley and without any shadow of a doubt there was hardly a finer hurler in Avondhu or Cork when Johnny was in full swing. He won many honours in the game with the Cork junior and Intermediate teams, the Avondhu teams as well as of course with his beloved Castletownroche with whom he played from his juvenile days right until he finished his career, It was generally agreed that Johnny would have been a regular on any other Inter/Co team at the time, to get on the Cork senior team of the day he would have had to displace some other great players of that era, in that way Johnny was perhaps very unlucky,
Once again our sincere sympathies to his wife and families, his brothers Ritchie and Dave, sisters, relatives and friends,

BEST WISHES TO TOMAS AND UCC
Well done to club player Tomas Clancy and UCC in reaching the Munster Club SF final in which they will meet Killarney Dr Crokes on Sunday Dec 4th. No doubt we will all be keeping our fingers crossed for you that day Tomas and not forgetting Rory either. |
|
BREATHING SPACE FOR OUR PLAYERS
For the first time for many weeks our playing members have not been involved in any competition as most of our engagements for the year on the field at any rate have been completed. As I write, I have not received any details of what is still outstanding and waiting to be played other than the MAHL Divisional final in which we must meet the Kanturk based team Cuchulainns, this will be the final of the Northern Region section with the winners going forward to contest a County section with all the other Regional winners, this will hopefully be completed before the end of November.
In the new North Cork Board Competition for the Coughlan Cup our IH hurlers were drawn to meet Charleville, the Divisional Champions and now after a long programme, the Co Champions also. As Charleville are still involved in the Co c/ship stages of the U21 HC as well as taking part in the Munster JHC, it does not seem possible to arrange this game in the foreseeable future, perhaps if it were left until the New Year it would provide a more meaningful test for both teams who are both anxious that proper respect is paid to the competition by both clubs and the prospect of playing later on in the bad conditions which may prevail then will not enhance the occasion for all involved.
BACK TO TRAINING
As I write these notes, I note a text just out requesting the adult hurlers report back for training as there are matches coming up. We will watch out for any news of them.
COMING EVENTS
Saturday December 3rd is the date set aside for the celebration of the winning of the Cork Co U21 HC and the MAHC of North Cork 25 years ago in 1986, the same year the J BHC was also won in North Cork by our club. Organising this event is in the capable hands of some of the players of that era such as Trevor Cooney, Arthur Coughlan, Michael O’Brien etc, I hope to be in a position to have some more details on this event by next week. It promises to be some night.
AGM DATE
On the following evening Sunday 4th December our Club’s AGM is destined to take place (I wonder if that is a good idea?) the meeting is timed to start at 7pm in the Clubhouse, all relevant information can be had from our club Runai Tom McCarthy,
TOMAS IS STILL ACTIVE WITH UCC
I note that our dual performer Tomas Clancy is still very active with UCC in the Munster Inter-Club SFC. On Sunday he helped the University to victory over the Limerick side Monaleen at Cloughduv and on behalf of our club I wish both Tomas and Rory O’Hagan who is also involved the best of luck in their quest to win Munster Club C/ship medals this year.
BEST WISHES TO KIERAN McGANN
On behalf of our club I wish to offer sincere best wishes to a former player and club member Kieran McGann on his forthcoming retirement from An Garda Siochana where he had reached the high position of Chief Superintendent after forty years of dedicated loyalty and hard work ethics during that period.
Kieran joined our club when he arrived in Fermoy in November 1971; he helped to strengthen our U21 squad almost immediately as he had already had some inter county experience with his own native Co of Clare. With his help we won two North Cork titles our first in this grade in 1972/3, in 1973 we lost rather controversially to Bandon in the Co SF but 1974 made up for a lot of previous disappointments when a team led by Tom Prendergast of Kerry fame, led the young side to County glory on a wet day in Dunmanway, Kieran played at midfield on that team and was a tower of strength throughout the year in which the team went undefeated in all games to win the league and Fitzgerald Cup also. Kieran was no bad hurler either and played many games for the club but football was his real love. A few pleasant memories come flooding back as I write, they include the trip to Carron where we played football against Kieran’s home club Michael Cusack’s after which we spent the night in Bellharbour, What a night! Another occasion was the famous trip to Coventry with Jimmy Dennigan and the late Tom Phelan! Both trips would constitute books of their own. Of course Kieran was also a very prominent member of the Fermoy GAA Squash club and a fiercely competitive player he was during those happy days.
Work commitments meant that he had to eventually retire from the game he loved but he never lost his love for Gaelic games as he proved when he became involved with the club in Castlelyons where Kieran and Josephine made their home over thirty odd years ago. Their son Ciaran kept up the tradition and over the last ten years or so he has been an outstanding player for both Castlelyons and Cork hurlers a factor that I am sure pleased Kieran quite a lot.
Despite losing Kieran’s services to our club, we never really lost his support both on and off the field, he rarely missed a c/ship game in which our teams were involved in during the intervening years and he was always up front to support any ventures that the club was involved in. We thank him for his support and his well intended help at all times, and we wish both Kieran and Josephine many years of health and happiness as they settle down to a happy retirement.
CONGRATS TO CHARLEVILLE
On behalf of our club, I congratulate Charleville on winning the North Cork and County Junior hurling C/ship on Sunday last, shades of two years ago when our side had to overcome the challenge posed by Clyda Rovers before we could play in the Co final that year, Kildorrery put up a valiant resistance before capitulating at the latter end of a great game. We look forward to crossing camans with the Charleville side in the New Year sometime as they are now promoted to Intermediate ranks.
LOTTO JACKPOT WORTH E18, 200
When the weekly Lotto numbers were drawn at Crean’s Bar last week, there was no winner found, the numbers drawn were 2, 13, 19, 27, Lucky Dip winners of E40 each were, Tom O’Donoghue c/o Brian Shinnick, Jack Roche c/o Kevin Cronin, Paul Cloney c/o Juvenile Club, Irene O’Sullivan c/o Sean O’Sullivan, Patsy Collins c/o Kevin Cronin,
This week the Jackpot will be worth E18, 200 when the draw returns to the Clubhouse, our thanks as usual to all who continue to support our draw every week. Remember you can also play lotto online at www.fermoygaa.com

MINOR HURLERS WIN COUNTY TITLE ON A UNIQUE DAY FOR FERMOY SPORT
Congratulations to the club’s minor hurlers on winning the Cork Co MAHC at Ballincollig on Sunday last where they defeated Newcestown after a very well contested and exciting final, however that is only the first half of the story about Sunday last, the second part concerns Fermoy’s Minor footballers only this time we are talking about the Fermoy Ladies Football Club whose minor team was also involved in the Co minor c/ship final against Clonakilty and this game also was played in Ballincollig immediately following the hurling final but in the adjoining pitch which is fitted out with Floodlights and these were in use for the occasion.
The Ladies minor team, after a slow start when they fell 0-3 behind, got well into the game to lead at the interval 3-4 to 0-3, Clon however got back into the game following the interval and the Fermoy girls had to battle for dear life just to hold out in a close but very exciting finish which saw our girls in front on the final score of 3-6 to 0-12 for the Clon girls, Congrats to all concerned with the team and to the team itself for giving such a disciplined and gutsy display to win the trophy.
Both teams arrived back in Fermoy around 7pm, they were met at Cork Rd by the Thomas Kent Pipe Band who led them in Parade through the town to Patrick St where, in front of a large crowd of jubilant supporters, the two teams were introduced to the crowds, first the hurlers whose captain is Mickey Pyne, were introduced by one of their mentors Michael Brennan, the girls captained by Claire Hutchings, were introduced by one of their own mentors Ron Flynn, Hurling coach and manager Denis Ring addressed the gathering and he outlined the course of the path and the training that each member of the side had to endure during the year in order to reach their goal which was to win on last Sunday. He thanked all his faithful helpers who have been working just as hard all the year and he paid a special tribute to all the parents of the team who were so supportive all year,
Both Brendan Keane and Gerry Feerick the respective club chairpersons also spoke very highly of the players and the mentors of both sides and thanked the supporters who have followed the teams all the year, the victories on Sunday were just as much for the supporters as it was for the players and the club. They thanked the people who arranged the welcome home party, the Thomas Kent Pipe Band and the members of the Fermoy Gardai who at short notice had made traffic adjustments etc so that the Parade could take place; they thanked Pat McCarthy for the use of his truck to introduce the teams etc.
Following the public tributes, both teams, their mentors, parents, club officials etc retired to the Clubhouse where all were treated to a nice hot meal after their long evening spent in Mid Cork. All in all, everyone was very happy with the successes of the day, all agreed that it was most unique that both minor teams should win their respective Co titles in the same venue and on the very same afternoon, it seemed so natural then that both sides celebrated together posing the question during the night “Will we ever see the likes of this occasion again in our club?” whether we will or not, it was certainly a wonderful one while it lasted and certainly is worth asking the question “Has such a unique double ever occurred in sport before this?”
Back to the hurling final, our lads started off very fast with points from David Geary before the same player was fast to avail of a slip by a defender to rifle home a goal and leave the scores 1-3 to 0-0, Newcestown began to come into the game and by the end of the first quarter they had scored 0-4 against our 1-3, exchanges were tense and tough after this but our side managed to keep ahead until Mikey Pyne seized on a slip by the Newcestown goalkeeper and the team captain made no mistake to put his team into a commanding 2-6 to 0-5 lead, corner forward Craig Murphy traded another point with the opposition before the half time whistle sounded with the scoreboard reading Fermoy 2-7 Newcestown 0-6, Our first half scores coming from David Geary 1-4 0-2 frees, Michael Pyne 1-2, and Craig Murphy 0-1,
Newcestown upped their game considerably in the second half, but they found the Fermoy defence a really hard nut to crack, we enjoyed a slice of luck when a ball struck the crossbar, I thought we were going to penalised at least once but the vigilance of keeper Tom O’Brien and the outstanding play of all our defenders frustrated the best efforts of the Newcestown lads, John Mullins came into the game in the fortieth minute and as usual he performed a good marking job on one of the danger players on the opposing side, David Geary came outfield with Michael Pyne moving into the full forward line, the latter was in great form all day and his return of 1-4 from play was equalled only by his colleague David Geary who also added 0-3 from frees.
As the second half progressed, we were under a fair bit of pressure to keep the Newcestown attack in check, they were continually searching for the goal that would propel them right back in the picture, solid defending plus some good goalkeeping by Tom, saw to it that when they eventually did get through for a goal it came far too late to save them from defeat. Our second half scores all came from the same two players David Geary 0-3 0-1free, and Michael Pyne 0-2, but while both players were excellent on the day, the team also had other heroes all through the field, as already stated Tom was very good in goal, the two cornerbacks Rory Clancy and Peter Murphy did mighty work in covering for full back Brian O’Donoghue as he chose to follow his own man, in front of them John Ring was never caught out of position and he cleared several times when the need was greatest, on his flanks Padraig Clancy and Conor O’Keeffe were always with their men and over the hour they both came out on top,
Our midfielders Martin Brennan and Dylan Lacey both worked their socks off all through the game, and helped their defence out of many dangerous situations. With Mikey Pyne in such devastating form on the forty, he seemed to overshadow his colleagues brother Josh and Padraig de Roiste, both lads played their hearts out while the inside forwards of Gary O’Callaghan who played with a broken finger, Craig Murphy and David Geary caused the opposing defenders quite a bit of trouble, of the subs who came on, John Mullins got the best chance to impress but Ronan O’Hagan, and Tom Keane will benefit greatly from the experience of having played this year,
The remainder of the panel was made up by lads such as Richard Cronin, Conall O’Sullivan, David Buckley, Dylan Thebult, Oladitun Amoso, James Ryan, Adam Forde, Cillian Twomey, Bryan Barry, Cian O’Carroll and Eoghan Cody,
The team are now the first official champions of the new Rebel Og Board’s Minor A hurling c/ship trophy, it was presented to team captain Michael Pyne who once again invited his colleague John Mullins to receive it with him, Michael was very gracious in his acceptance speech, he even found time to remember that his opposite number and captain of Newcestown Mark Courtney had been injured in a car crash last week and so he had missed the game, Mikey wished him well and offered him hope that he would be available to play should the teams meet again in the league which is still to be finalised.
So its congratulations to all the players on the team and panel, the mentors Denis Ring, Michael Brennan, Jerry Galvin, and Paul O’Keeffe, medical men Dr Paddy Burke and Tomas Shinnick, and all those in the mentors support team who are ever-present at matches and training all the year. The team are awaiting news of the final of the league in which they will again have to face Cuchulainns from Kanturk.
BRENNAN CUP WIN FOR IF TEAM
Our Intermediate footballers turned out in numbers for their first round game in the new North Cork Board competition for the Brennan Cup, our first round opponents were Glanworth and the game was played under the lights in Fermoy on Friday night last.
The first half was dominated by Glanworth who led at the interval by 2-3 to 0-3, the first five minutes or so of the second period continued to see the Harbour side dominate exchanges, Fermoy’s mentors made a series of changes and substitutions which suddenly transformed the team and they went on from here to win comfortably at the finish with players like Seanie McCarthy (3) and Richie Kelleher (2) making a huge impact when it came to scoring goals.
It was a very heartening occasion to see that the entire panel showed such respect for the memory of the late John Brennan who was a former President of the Avondhu Board and who had such a passion for football in his time. Our next game will be against the winners of the Mitchelstown versus Liscarroll game.
LOTTO JACKPOT HITS E18, 000
The Lotto Jackpot has reached the very attractive figure of E18, 000 after last weeks draw failed to find a winner, the numbers drawn were 5, 17, 30, 33, Lucky Dip winners of E40 each were Paddy Leonard c/o Kevin Cronin, Pat Clancy c/o Clancy’s Bar, Eamonn and Seanie Clancy c/o Clancy’s Bar, Joseph Dowling c/o Bridie Dowling, Colin Morrison c/o Joe Morrison,
As stated, the Jackpot will be worth E18, 000 when the draw visits Crean’s bar this week, our thanks as always to all our subscribers and promoters for their help and support always.
VOTES OF SYMPATHY
The sympathy of our club is expressed to the family and extended families of the late Cllr Aileen Pyne, who died so suddenly last week.
A native of the area, having lived at her parents home in Isle-le-Clash, Fermoy, she was very well inducted in the affairs of Gaels especially as her late father Dan O’Connor was a former player with the great teams of Shanballymore in his time, her brother John who still resides in the old home with his wife Catherine and family, is heavily involved with the Kilworth club.
The late Aileen, who was so well known for her various roles first as a teacher in the Colaiste an Chraoibhin, and later on in the field of Politics where she was an excellent person on behalf of her constituents no matter what side of the divide they stood, She was a staunch supporter of our club’s activities down through the years and rarely missed a major club function and always ensured that she was a fully paid up member.
To her family, her brother John, her sisters AnnaBeth and June, her grandchildren, relatives, and friends, we offer our deepest sympathies.
The sympathy of our club is also extended to the family and extended families, brother Jim and sister May, of the late Mrs Sally Galligan (nee Lomasney) Abbey View House, Castlelyons who died recently, the late Sally had connections with Fermoy and our club, her late husband Billy, was a former playing member of the club having played hurling and football at minor and senior grades, he also played football with the Cork minor team of the late forties era.

WEATHER WASHED OUT CO FINAL FOR OUR MINORS
I do not believe that anyone was too disappointed when the news got around that our game in the Co MAHC final against Newcestown which was to have been played at Ballincollig on Sunday last was postponed due to the dreadful weather conditions which existed at the time.
Our match was timed to start at 4pm but at approx 2pm the word began to circulate about the decision to cancel the game so I hope that nobody really missed out on the news and actually travelled to the venue. The news was also broadcast on Co Sound so hopefully all got it in time.
As I write these notes, I have not had any official announcement as to the re-fixture, so as usual I say please refer to the official weekend fixture list or check with any club official re news of same.
No doubt Denis Ring will have his charges back in training this week and hoping for better weather conditions for the re-fixture, again I am appealing to all our followers to watch out for the official fixture to appear and to make sure once again that as many as possible will travel for the game. Again the best of luck to our lads,
BRENNAN CUP GAME FRI NIGHT
One of the new North Cork Board competitions will commence for Fermoy on this Friday night when Glanworth are the visitors at 7.30pm.
This Cup is called after a former President of the Avondhu Board, the late John Brennan a staunch member and official of the Kilshannig club, this will be a knock out competition and the Board is extremely anxious to get it finished in time for the Divisional Convention in early December. I am appealing on behalf of our club to all our players to make a very special effort to field as near to full strength as possible for this very prestigious tournament which commemorates a very loyal and true GAA man.
SHL SEMIS PLAYED IN FERMOY
The two semi finals of the Red Fm Co SHL were played in Fermoy on Friday night last when Sarsfields defeated Ballymartle and Midleton just got the better of a Newtown side who just did not want to be defeated and were only denied by a superb save by Midleton goalkeeper Tommy Wallis in the very last act of the game.
LOTTO NOW WORTH E17,800
There was no winner of the Lotto Jackpot worth E17, 600 when the draw took place in Kerins Bar last week. Lucky Dip winners were Donie Cashman c/o Brian Shinnick, John Howard c/o Web Site, Colin Clancy c/o Kerins Bar, Denis Power c/o Pat O’Brien, Dermot Gowen c/o Self, This week the draw returns to the Clubhouse where the Jackpot will increase to E17, 800 for a lucky winner, Once again on behalf of the club I thank all for your continued support of this very valuable draw on behalf of our clubs, You can also play Lotto online atwww.fermoygaa.com for just E2 per week.

MINOR HURLERS PULL OUT THE STOPS TO REACH CO FINAL
Our minor hurlers are our club’s last team standing as regards a c/ship title victory and on Saturday afternoon last at rain lashed Riverstown they defied all the elements and a strong display from the Ballincollig side who were pre-match favourites to win the competition, and to win their way into the Co final as a result of an emphatic 2-15 to 0-8 win in this semi-final clash.
The heavy rain which fell before the match, tended to make underfoot conditions very slippery for both sides, but fair play to both teams and especially to a very understanding and sensible referee Cathal McAllister, they all overcame the conditions and proceeded to serve up a wonderful display of fast and first time hurling in a game that was in the balance until Fermoy got their two goals late in the second half to seal their place in the coming Co final.
Our lads were first to get on the scoreboard but Ballincollig quickly replied to level matters at 0-2 each, the Mid Cork side led for the only time at 0-3 to 0-2 ten minutes into the game but our side settled down and pulled away to lead 0-6 to 0-5 by the 25th minute, they had increased their advantage 0-8 to 0-6 when the interval was called, our first half scorers were David Geary 0-4, Martin Brennan 0-1, Mikie Pyne 0-2, Josh Pyne 0-1,
The second half saw Fermoy coming more on top and only three brilliant saves by the Ballincollig goalkeeper prevented our lads from sealing this victory much sooner, by the 50th minute we were ahead 0-11 to 0-7 and at this stage Ballincollig were coming right back into the game and realising that they still had a chance to win it, but a resolute Fermoy defence in which goalkeeper Tom O’Brien was outstanding all through, and Peter Murphy was rock solid all day, they never succeeded in piercing our rearguard, then in the 55th minute David Geary succeeded in shaking off the shackles of his marker to at last beat the ‘Collig goal keeper and two minutes later the same player again evaded the defenders to score his second goal in trademark fashion, the final whistle came later to leave Fermoy winning comfortably by 2-15 to 0-8 for Ballincollig. Our second half scores coming from David Geary 2-4,(2-8 in total) Craig Murphy, Gary O’Callaghan and Michael Pyne 0-1 each
Fermoy had some other excellent performers right throughout their team, Dylan Lacey was outstanding at midfield all through where he was ably assisted by the hard working Martin Brennan, behind them John Ring was always on the look out and covered with all the cuteness of a veteran, his flankers were Padraig Clancy on the right who was in the thick of everything and who had to eventually give way after shipping some hard knocks over the hour. Conor O’Keeffe on the left flank was the essence of neatness in everything he did and was well on top of his marker throughout. Behind them Rory Clancy, Brian O’Donoghue and as stated Peter Murphy all dealt capably with their dangerous opponents especially during the second period,
Up front Padraig de Roiste and the Pyne Brothers formed a very lively half forward line and with the aforementioned Geary, the outstanding Gary O’Callaghan and Craig Murphy all in top form they were eventually to win the battle against the Mid Cork defence.
Perhaps one of the better moments of the day came with the introduction after over a year on the sidelines due to medical reasons, of a player who in normal form was expected to be a revelation this year, however John Mullins is now back in action and the confidence of having a player of John’s calibre to call on must be very heartening for our team and its mentors, we were all delighted to see John running on to the field once more and we wish him well and a most successful future in all sports. During the ten minutes or so of his time on the field John showed all the assurances of coming back to his old form. Ronan O’Hagan was introduced for the last quarter as was Tom Keane, both are outstanding members of the U16 team.
The final of this competition will probably be played on the coming Sunday, however at the time of writing no final decision had been reached as to date, time and venue, so I appeal to all our readers and members to check the weekend fixture list or check with some of our club members during the week. The latest news to hand indicates that the game will be played in Ballincollig on Sunday at 3pm, however I feel that it may change again so as I said check it out;
Our opponents in the final will be the boys from Newcestown near Bandon, a great club with teams in the Premier Intermediate Hurling and senior football c/ships so we do not expect anything easy from these lads, on Saturday last they defeated Cuchulainns from Kanturk by a single point in their semi-final game, we know how difficult it was when we defeated Kanturk in the Northern final about a month ago or so, So no doubt Denis Ring will have his troops well prepared for the occasion and on behalf of all in our club we wish Denis, his fellow mentors and the panel of players involved all the best of good luck in the final.
Once more and hopefully not for the last time this year, I am appealing to our large horde of followers to come out for this game in strength to support this team in their bid to win the first Co title in this grade under the new County Structures set up eg the Rebel Og MAHC trophy.
CONGRATS TO TOMAS AND RUAIRI
After the disappointment endured when Brian O’Sullivan just missed out on a County SHC medal two weeks ago with his college CIT, there was compensation this week when a county senior football championship medal has found its way back to Fermoy after many years when Tomas Clancy one of our most promising club players in recent years and Ruairi O’Hagan another player with a great future in the game, were both members of the UCC set up which defeated Castlehaven in the Co SF final played in Pairc Ui Chaoimh on Sunday last. Tomas played the entire game at right half back while Ruairi was on the bench despite the fact that he helped very much to win the quarter final game v Clon scoring 1-1, Informed judges told me that Tomas played really well all through in what was a very tough and tight game which was in the balance right until the last minute. Incidentally Tomas who has some of the blood of the late famed Cork and Duhallow footballer Dick Harnedy flowing through his veins, has won himself a nice handful of prestigious c/ship medals during this year, he won Munster U21 football c/ship, Munster and All-Ireland Junior Football c/ships, and now he has added a Co SFC medal to his tally, lets hope he can add a few with Fermoy in the future years and add to his North Cork and Co JHC medals
THE ANDY SCANNELL CUP
To the best of my knowledge, the two lads are the first Fermoy players to help win the Andy Scannell Cup since it was first put up for this competition probably during the sixties, younger club members may not realise that the late Andy Scannell whom the Co SFC Cup commemorates is a former Fermoy Club player, a club officer and the driving force when negotiations for our present pitch were taking place, a selector when the Club last won the Co SF title in 1945, a Cork Selector also that year when Cork won the Sam Maguire Cup, he later became Chairman of the North Cork Board and followed this by becoming Chairman of the Cork Co Board a period when Cork won three All-Ireland titles in a row, he was Vice-Chairman of the Munster Council, and he was also a prominent referee in his time and was closely associated with the Irish Language Movement at the time, He died a young man in March 1959 at the age of 53. “A lot done but still a lot to do” The late Andy was the Principle teacher at Clondulane NS, the Scannell name still lives on in the Village in the persons of his grandsons and great grandchildren all of whom are still actively involved in our club and games.

Vote of sympathy
The sympathy of our club is extended to the sister Elizabeth and relatives of the late William O’Connell late of 40 Patrick St Fermoy who died in Stanmore, Middlesex recently, The Family O’Connell’s ran a family business which comprised of most things at the time when they resided in Patrick St. The late William took part in local street leagues in his youth before he left Fermoy,
May he rest in peace. |

MINORS:
Very best wishes to the Fermoy minors who take on Newcestown in the Minor ‘A’ county hurling final next Sunday.
The match will be held in Ballincollig with a scheduled throw-in time of 4pm.
This is a huge match for the club and we’d urge everyone who is in a position to travel to cheer the lads on to make the effort.
Best of luck lads – and here’s to the black-and-amber flags flying high on Sunday night.
U-6/7/8:
Last Saturday we brought the curtain down on a long and successful season with a trip to Ballyhooly to play the locals and Killavullen in a football blitz.
All the games were close and our lads acquitted themselves well.
The games were played in a sporting manner where the emphasis was on fun.
Many thanks to Ballyhooly for inviting us to a very well run blitz and well done to Ger Lombard and the rest of the crew for organising the games and the hospitality afterwards.
It has been a long year for the players starting in February training and playing matches throughout the season.
The players have played loads of matches, including blitzes and challenge games.
We would like to thank the players and their parents for all their help and good humour throughout the season.
Our season is now over until the springtime when we will be in contact with you.
In the meantime keep practising the skills and remember there is a hurling wall available at the main pitch through out the winter to perfect the skills.
The mentors would like to thank Timmy Shanahan and Conor O'Mahony for all their hard work throughout the season which made life a lot easier for the rest of the mentors.
Thanks again to all the players and parents and see you all next year after recharging the batteries.

This sunday we will have a match in Mallow at 11am. All players to be at the main Fermoy pitch for 10am.
If you are unable to attend please contact Bosco (086) 6089443.
Last Saturday we gave out permission slips to our players re our trip to Limerick on November 5. Please make sure parents and guardians that these slips are filled in and returned to us by next week to make out our numbers travelling.
This trip will be our final outing of the season and we will all be travelling by bus to Mungret Limerick (bus being funded by us - no charge) to play a football blitz.
On our way back we will be stopping in the Gallery Bar and Restaurant in Mallow proprietor Steven "Ginger" Feerick great supporter of Fermoy GAA for hot food and refreshments for the kids.
This will be a great treat for all the U-9s who worked so hard over the year in all their matches and blitzes.
See you all at training on Thursday night.
U-10:
Fermoy U-10’s were away to a football blitz in Glenville on Saturday October.15. Four games were played on the day.
Fermoy v Glenville: Fermoy were off to a flying start with Goals from Jack Waters and Darragh Daly, and with strong defensive work from our team members DJ O Driscoll, Dion Mc Cormack and Richard Lombard kept out a very determined Glenville team. Adam Morrison made some great saves on the day. Fermoy came out worthy winners in their first match.
Fermoy v Aghada: Fermoy lads suddenly clicked into gear for their second match against Aghada again getting the only goal of the game. Patrick Asikaiwe, Luke Mc Convelle and Aaron O’Farrell in the backs, to our forwards Sean Gothard, Jeff Ennis and Conor Morrison, who put in a great display of football, to gain another win for Fermoy.
Fermoy v Mallow: Following the two previous wins the boys were out to win there next match but this was no easy task, as the lads were tired and the rain was falling heavy. Cian Condon , Cormack Roche and DJ O’Driscoll did everything to keep Mallow at bay, but this was not to be as Mallow were on the score board with only a few minutes gone, and they kept up the pressure all through the match. David Forrester had some great saves but it was not to be for Fermoy, with their first loss of the day. Well done to Mallow.
Fermoy v Mitchelstown: Fermoy faced in to their last match, tired wet and down hearted from their first defeat. But Mitcheltown were on a roll after winning all their matches. Fermoy fought hard for a win, with Jake Crean, DJ O’ Driscoll and Patrick Asikaiwe, soaking up the pressure, but Mitcheltown brought a physical presence that the Fermoy boys could not cope with as the clock counted down. Jeff Ennis, Jack Waters and Richard Lombard they did everything they could to get the ball up to our forwards, but again Mitcheltown were winning most of the ball, and came out worthy winners on the day. Thanks to Mitcheltown for a sporting game.
Well done to the Fermoy team who won two out of there four matches. They showed some great skill and never gave up. Our thanks go out to the Glenville GAA Club for a hosting the blitz.
Fermoy panel: Adam Morrison, Conor Morrison, Jeff Ennis, Sean Gothard, Jake Crean, Cian Condon, Arron O’Farrell, Richard Lombard, Jack Waters, Darragh Daly, Cormack Roche, DJ O’Driscoll, Dion Mc Cormack, Patrick Asikaiwe, Luck Mc Convelle, David Forrester.
Please note that U-10 football training is on Thursday night at 6.15pm in the main GAA pitch and also football training Saturday morning at 10am in the main pitch.
Please wear appropriate clothing and bring water and €2 euro to cover cost. Any changes will be confirmed by text message.
U-11 & U-12:
Fermoy Juvenile GAA staged a special U-12 Gaelic football blitz last Saturday to mark the 125th anniversary of the club’s founding.
We had invited a number of local clubs to take part – and Ballyhooly and Glanworth agreed to support the venture.
Unfortunately, a third invited club was forced to withdraw and the Fermoy U-11s kindly agreed to fill the gap and take part despite giving a year away to their opponents.
Thankfully, the leaden skies failed to deliver on their threat and the blitz was finished before any drizzle began.
The football was fast, flowing and with some great skills on display.
The two highlights of the day were the Fermoy U-11s clash with Glanworth which ended in a 3-4 to 4-1 draw and the Fermoy U-12 match against a strong Ballyhooly side that ended in a two point Fermoy victory.
Fermoy U-12s went into their final pool game – fittingly enough against the Fermoy U-11s – knowing that a victory would clinch them the 125 Cup.
The U-11s have had two very close matches with their older club mates already this season and were determined to give the U-12s a run for their money.
Unfortunately, due to injuries and rival sports, the U-11s had only 14 players to choose from on the day – which meant that they had to play all three games without subs.
They managed to keep in touch with the U-12s to halftime with a scoreline of 1-3 to 0-2.
But tired legs took their toll in the second half and the U-12s ability to refresh their line-up with subs proved the difference as the older lads eased clear in the final minutes for a clear cut and well deserved victory.
The consensus on the day is that, when these two panels are eventually combined, Fermoy will have a team that will give any club a game.
In a lovely gesture by the U-12 mentors Bosco Creed, Geoff Wales and Matt O’Callaghan, the U-12 joint captains, John Wales and Padraig McGrath, asked for the U-11 captain, Ralph Riegel, to come forward and also hold the 125 Cup aloft.
Our thanks to Glanworth and Ballyhooly for taking part in a blitz played in a great spirit and which bodes very well for GAA in all three clubs.
Fermoy U-12 panel: Adrian Keohane, Jamie Hussey, Colm Hurley, Cillian Lynch, Dale Dawson, Padraig McGrath, David O'Callaghan, Nathan Collins, Seán Holland, JJ Hickey, John Wales, Colm Dorgan, Darragh Scott, Liam Harty, Ryan Sargent, Shane O'Keefe, Dean Ryan, Keith Flynn and Jack Caplice.
Fermoy U-11 panel: Oisin Finn, Aaron Boyce, David Mulcahy, Luke Ahern, Ralph Riegel, Greg Lardner, David Lardner, Jack Scannell, Shane Hurley, James Molloy, Adam Ronan, Gary Coleman, Daniel Regan and Jake Ryan.
Special thanks to Mick Hennessy and Noel Crowley for generously agreeing to give up their Saturday mornings and referee the various fixtures.
All associated with Fermoy GAA would also like to extend best wishes to Mick Hennessy on his forthcoming deployment for UN peacekeeping duties to the Lebanon.
U-14:
Please liaise with your mentors for upcoming matches and training times.
